The content of this joint discussion on implementing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as an interdisciplinary principle in schools in Austria and Uganda. Aspects of ESD like climate change education, empowerment of civil societies for taking over responsibility for their environment and their communities are cross-cutting subjects that can be integrated into nearly all teaching topics. A didactic focus lies on innovative teaching-learning formats and arrangements that deal with the topic of global climate change from a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary perspective.
Questions on causes and effects of global climate changes, as well as on possibilities and options for taking action to mitigate or adapt to its effects, should be problematized against the background and examples of mutual relationships and interdependencies between the two cooperating partner countries. Identification and elaboration of concrete conflict situations, concerns and dilemmas that arise from the topic of global climate change in the two partner countries, as well as critical reflection and empowering educational approaches of action-taking and civic engagement form the core principles for innovative learning settings.

Dr. Alfred Buluma holds a PhD in Education is lecturer at Makerere University. His research interests are in, teacher education, climate change adaptation and resilience, early childhood education, education for indigenous communities, online pedagogy, peace education, classroom pedagogical practices, assessment of teaching and learning as well as children focused researches. He has published in education technology, curriculum, Pedagogy, assessment and learning in communities.
Josephine Estate, PHD is a lecturer at Makerere University in Uganda. She has with more than 27-year experience in university teaching, research and outreach activities. She has authored articles in referred journal on teaching and learning and teacher professional development. She is a facilitator for Pedagogical Transformation for Africa (PedaL), under the Partnership for African Social and Governance Research (PASGR). She has published ecology and education, has interests in gender, climate change education, peace, justice and leadership in environmental education.
Claudia Fahrenwald, PhD is a Professor of Organizational Education and School Development at the University of Education Upper Austria in Linz. Her current research areas are civic engagement education, leadership, and gender. She has published multiple articles and chapters and has authored, co-authored or edited books including Gender and Education, Social Innovation in Education, and Organizational Education.
